About

Working across a broad range of media including installation, video, drawing and sculpture, Jaime Humphreys’ practice is underpinned by an interest in exploring people’s relationship to the natural environment. The natural and human-made environments found in Japan, where Humphreys has been based for over twenty years, provide inspiration for a practice that attempts to evoke a sense of transience in human endeavor. Focusing on various contexts such as forestry, topography, artificial plants, and, more recently, the significance of rocks in Japanese gardens, he develops works that are temporal, process-oriented, and contemplative in nature. Developing out of his background in drawing and the action of “tracing,” he continues to trace his subjects of interest, revealing new ways of perceiving natural landscapes and materials and examining our relationship to them.

Currently based in Yamanashi prefecture and originally from the UK, Humphreys’ works have been presented in Japan and internationally. Humphreys is pursuing his own creative practice while also working as an adjunct professor at Tokyo University of the Arts and various other visual arts institutions.
